Rodeo

A children's book project that I started and stopped because I wasn't sure of the story, the title is "Copains Comme Cochons" in French, which basically means "Best Friends in The World" in English, story of a pig who would love to be a horse and a dog who would love to be a cow-boy, bored in their little farm and dreaming about rodeo contests against real cow boys.
This is a test for the cover of the book plus 3 sepia ink vignettes of composition concepts for the beginning, the middle and the end of the story.
My Sculptor friend in Paris is working on a sculpt from this cover illustration, 2.75 inches tall, I will have pictures of the rough sculpt soon.

i think you have terrific color sense to go with exceptional drawing and design. i prefer the "humanity" of the ink sketches as they are less perfect and reveal more of your hand in them. i like the cover but wonder what a watercolor would look like. have you ever worked in gouache? you can get the graphic precision you get from photoshop but, also add more texture. just a thought. your work is so strong i figured it wouldn't hurt to make the suggestion.

Thanks Kactiguy!
John, thank you very much for your comment, much appreciated and very flattered! I did few gouaches, I do really like working with it actually, it's true that it would be nice to try it on this cover and the inside pages, maybe a kind of "Golden Book" style with nice interesting textures. I did this one on photoshop because I thought it would go very well with the design of the characters, simple flat shapes with bold colours.
Wasn't sure about watercolours as I thought it wouldn't work with this kind of design, but I should give it a go and try different versions, give more atmosphere and depth in the skies, as on the sepia roughs.

I like the flat style of the cover a lot.
would be a great short as well, what a
good story. compare it to the crap that
came from a californian farm recently...

Let's animate it!

Stef said...

Thanks Hans! I'm very flattered. I'm going to finish the book and probably auto publish it as it's difficult to convice a publisher to do so. And maybe do a short from it one day, I would love that!

Hey Elliot! thanks!

Alina and Paul, thanks for you words guys!

Uli! are you serious?! I would love you to do test with those characters, or a short as Hans said, I would be honoured!

UM said...

Why don't you come up with a 15-20 sec idea and set-up based on your book to do a test sequence. I'm serious! I'd love to do something with that.

I like the sketches, but I think the color-illustration is just superb. I would like to see the sketches in color too.

Stef, I've always thought the colour version is a lot of fun. Interesting to see the sketches too but for me the colour one works best & is perfect for animation.

Hey funny pig! Not you...I mean on the picture ;) The small sepia vignettes are great!

And in general, I really am a fan of your observation drawings. They're very well observed, very sensible! I especially like your Sicily sketches, the two first balconies...can't stop watching them. Very nice color Paris rooftops too ;)

Thank you very much everybody for your comments, I'll work on the project again to finish the book and auto publish it, Uli offered me to animate them as well for a test sequence...that's going to be amazing! Thanks Uli!

Stef said...

Thanks Smook! not for the test sequence, but as soon as we will start the production of the Feature Movie, we will need you and loads of Artists, as we would like to do the sequels as well of course!

Génial! J'ai une affection toute particulière pour les cochons. :-) Fais gaffe tout de même, je crois qu'il existe une BD de Curd Ridel qui porte le même titre.

Stef said...

More news to come next week. Enormes bises et a bientot en scoot ...On fait la course????

I know I'm really late on this one, but I was trolling through the archives and caught a peek at these 3 sepia sketches. They're amazing! Great expressions and a real loose quality. Awesome Stef.
